Syrhea Conaway is a teaching artist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer who lives and works in St. Louis. Writing, arranging, and performing music since age 10, Conaway has earned medals in District and State competitions, and she performed at Carnegie Hall with the National Youth Chorus at age 18. She has since twice performed for TEDx Gateway Arch, given musical speeches for the Arts and Education Council, been a panelist on “Women in Music”, moderated conversations with Damon Davis, as a part of USDAC and the Regional Arts Commission’s CultureSHIFT 2016, as well as St. Louis Blues Society’s Race and Blues series in 2018.  She has opened for many national artists such as, Asobi Seksu, Kristeen Young, Future Islands, and Paul Rucker (cellist/artist), and collaborated with world-renown ensemble Alarm Will Sound for a performance at the Sheldon Concert Hall in 2015.  In the fall of 2017 she participated as a member of New Music Circles’ St. Louis Ensemble collaboration led by LA electronic musician John Weise. She was also performed with the Nakatani Gong Orchestra, lead by percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani in the fall of 2022. She’s produced live sound design for the Peabody Award Winning Podcast “To the Best of Our Knowledge” that aired on 220 NPR stations in the summer of 2017.  She made her acting debut in the winter of 2018 with Metro Theater’s production of Wonderland: Alice’s Rock and Roll Adventure. She accepted the DJ in Residence of 2019 at the Contemporary Art Museum which aided in her rediscovery of her classical roots that led to a culmination of World Premieres of three pieces commissioned by Chamber Project of St. Louis. (“Beauty Beneath” 2019, “Silver Linings”2021, and “Breakthrough” 2022) Conaway continues to present workshops at local schools and libraries and has presented for the Center of Creative Arts (COCA)’s Summer/Autum Institute, which aims to bring art integration to school curriculum, in 2017 – 2020. Currently, you’ll find Conaway as an adjunct faculty at COCA, composing commissioned work for Chamber Project St. Louis, Classical Guitar Society of St. Louis, and the upcoming “Queen of Blues” production through the National Blues Museum. Conaway also scores original music for local theater companies including, Lawrence Art Center, Shakespeare Festival of St. Louis, SIUE, COCA , Metro Theater Company, Upstream Theater, and occasionally acts as the music director. Through the Sheldon Concert Hall and Galleries SOLID program (Science of Learning Instrument Design), Conaway, travels to schools in the St. Louis Metropolitan Area, and beyond to teach students how to build a musical instrument out of recycled materials. She can also be found occasionally performing as Syna So Pro and other local bands/ensembles in the midwest region, and is a primary musician in Metro Thearter Company’s production of a new play “Spells of the Sea“.
